What to wear on the day of your experience.

Start With a Key Piece.

A great way to begin is by choosing one outfit you love. Whether it is a dress, pants, skirt or suit, these photos should reflect you.

This will also help determine the colour palette you desire.

Once you have that anchor piece, you can build the rest of the family’s outfits around it.

Step 1. Choose your colour palette.

We recommend selecting 3 to 5 complementary colours for your family’s outfits. Neutrals and soft tones work beautifully, where bold, bright colours can feel too distracting. If you start with a patterned piece, pull colours from the pattern to incorporate into the other outfits. Also, think about where you’ll display the photos in your home.

Will the clothing colours and photo backdrop complement your home decor?

Pastel tones.

Pastel tones are soft pale colours like lavender, soft pinks, light blues, etc.

Neutral tones.

Neutral tones is colour without much intensity or saturation like tans, beiges, ivories, creams, whites and greys.

Jewel tones.

Jewell tones are colours that are derived from gemstones such as sapphire, ruby and emerald.

Earthy tones.

The colour palette of earthy tones typically includes warm and muted shades of brown, green and muted reds.

Step 2. Select a feature pattern.

To avoid a busy look, it’s best to have only one family member wear a patterned outfit. Everyone else can wear block colours that complement the pattern. If you’d like to use more than one patterned piece, ensure the patterns complement each other, by sharing similar colours or keeping one pattern subtle. Usually, we suggest keeping the look cohesive, we recommend limiting patterns to just one or two items for every five people. This way, the patterns add interest without distracting from the overall harmony of the outfits

Step 3. Add texture and movement.

Textured fabrics like knits, linen, corduroy, lace, or waffle materials add depth and visual interest to your photos. Flowing fabrics, such as skirts or dresses, also create beautiful movement, adding a sense of energy and life to your images.

Step 4. Prioritise comfort.

Comfort is essential to looking and feeling your best. Choose clothing and shoes that are both comfortable and stylish but know that barefoot photos are also an option.

Step 5. Avoid these common styling mistakes.

Graphic logos or large brand names: These tend to date your photos and distract from the overall aesthetic.

Overly matching outfits: Styling the family in identical outfits (like white tops and jeans) can feel dated and may not reflect your family’s unique personality.

Too many patterns: Keep patterns to a minimum: one or two patterned pieces at most.

Ill-fitting or restrictive clothing: Ensure everyone’s outfits allow for easy movement and comfort, so you can play, cuddle, and interact naturally during the shoot. Dress for your body shape.

Step 6. Success is in the small details.

When it comes to a studio photoshoot, the finer details can make a big difference in the final images. Paying attention to these little things ensures your portraits look polished and timeless. Go from head to toe. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

1. Socks and Shoes.

Socks: If they’re visible, opt for plain socks in neutral colours to avoid drawing unnecessary attention. Bright or patterned socks can unintentionally steal focus in a photo. Bright or patterned socks can unintentionally steal focus in a photo.

Shoes: Ensure your shoes are clean and in good condition. Scuffed or dirty shoes can be distracting, especially in full-length or seated shots.

2. Clothing Presentation.

Ironing: Wrinkles can be surprisingly noticeable in studio lighting, so be sure to iron shirts, pants, and dresses before the session. A crisp, wrinkle-free outfit helps create a professional, polished look.

Transporting Clothing: For delicate fabrics or outfits prone to creasing, bring them to the studio on hangers rather than folded in a bag. We have a dedicated space where you can hang your clothes upon arrival to keep them looking their best.

3. Accessories and Jewellery.

Jewellery: Stick to pieces that complement your outfit rather than competing with it. Subtle and cohesive jewellery works best to enhance your overall look without overwhelming the photo. Avoid wearing too many statement pieces unless they’re central to your style.

Watches: Consider leaving your watch at home, as it can distract from the image. Watches can often look out of place, especially in timeless or elegant portraits.

Should you book hair or makeup?

This decision is entirely up to you! Many clients choose professional hair and makeup to feel polished and confident for their session.

Soft, natural styles—like loose beach waves and a glowing, subtle makeup look—photograph beautifully.

If you prefer a no-makeup look or feel more comfortable styling yourself, that’s fine too. The most important thing is that you feel confident, comfortable, and true to yourself. We do not offer hair or makeup services at our studio, so if you’d like professional styling, please ensure it’s done prior to your session.
